Interior design to every one of us is the essential element of a home. An interior design is composed of components of structural elements such as walls, ceiling, floor, and column. Truth is, interior designing is the merging of creativity, art, and science that creates a beautiful and functional space. To be able to create a home that is not only beautifully designed but also anticipate our needs and to bring into being a healthy home for our well-being, there are seven elements of interior design that interior designers will follow to create a balanced interior space.

Space is the foundational design element and the most important aspect of interior design. When building space, it needs to be taken into full consideration in order to knock a beautiful and balanced room.

In fact, space can be split into two categories which are positive and negative space. Positive space is when space is filled with furniture or any other items, while negative space is a space that is “empty” in between the entirety of the room. Although negative space might seem to be somewhat desolated, it is a good thing to balance out the room.

Regardless of whether it is natural or artificial lighting, lighting comes to the aid of setting the atmosphere within a room. Lighting also serves its functional purposes including illuminating, defining, and emphasizing a room or even an object of a room. Whereas general light or ambient lighting can set up a significant character of an interior design. Lighting can be divided into three different types, which are: Task lighting, accent lighting, and mood lighting.

Task lighting is where the lighting provides an increased amount of light to help out a specific task, especially visual tasks to be carried through. Accent lighting is often used to highlight an object or area. While mood lighting is used to create and bring a certain atmosphere into space.

This design element refers to the style, look, or feel of an object. This can be something with a smooth fabricated texture such as silk smooth or crisp linen, or fabrics that lead towards a rougher texture, and so on. There is also the visual texture that is more two-dimensional and created on a flat surface like a stone or wood wallpaper that can translate into giving a rustic feel to a room.

Texture has the ability to provide more depth and dimension to a space. For instance, adding a rug can add a layer of texture and character to a certain space. Or, choose a thick and heavy curtain for a bolder look, and using textured walls is the easier way to achieve a more personalised space for your home.

Pattern works as a design element that illustrates perception towards colour or graphic motif. With the right choice of pattern, this design element can effortlessly alter a soulless space to something that is lively and dynamic. Every pattern owns its own unique vibes that can add life and visual elements to a space. Be sure and careful when applying a pattern to a space, do not overdo it so that it does not overwhelm the whole interior design.

It is one of the core elements of interior design to set up a mood and atmosphere in a space. However, colour can be more than just an element, but can also be a true focal point to any space. Choosing a splash of bold colour scheme for a wall paint can act as the contrast of a room and choosing. Colours will also create an illusion of a room. A lighter colour makes space appear to be more spacious and roomy whilst a darker colour makes space seem a little bit more small and narrow.

A design element that makes great importance for an interior design, and if lines are used unerringly, it can make space stand out. A space is majorly composed of lines such as pillars, windows, or furniture. As they play an important role in interior design, interior designers use the major type of lines to create the shape of a space. There are as well three different types of lines that make up the whole interior design.

  • Horizontal line
Horizontal lines make a space appear wider and help to expand the look of a space. You can also find horizontal lines in furniture items,  such as sofas, dining tables, bookshelves, etc.
  • Vertical line
Vertical lines will make a space to be higher and taller than it actually is, and it usually consists of door frames, pillars, or windows.
  • Dynamic line
Dynamic lines can also be diagonal, zig-zag, or curved. These lines are mostly applied to stairways and corridors. Whereas curved lines are commonly found in furniture items, windows, and arched doorways.

The form is essentially referred to as the shape of a room. There are two types of form, geometric and organic.

Nevertheless, both geometric or organic are useful to bring balance to a room and are the design elements that will define the entire look of a space if applied accordingly to the interior design principles.
